On Sunday, September 18, the Robinson's in their shiny ’56 Chevrolet, Osborn's in a ’63 Ford Falcon, Boulware's in a ’66 Ford Mustang and Weber's in their ’27 REO toured to Stayton to display their historical cars at the Covered Bridge Festival. The trip was eventful from start to finish. Weber's led the way on the back roads through Turner only to find the planned route was closed for construction. With some minor route changes the tour continued through some new and different roads that luckily led to Stayton. Ed almost missed the park turn off but a “Pioneer Park” sign gave him a valuable clue.
The food was excellent at the festival. Ed can verify that the hamburgers, award winning pies and ice cream were VERY good. The ice cream vendor was giving out larger than normal portions because it was the last day of the festival and he did not want ice cream left over. There was a much larger arts and crafts display this year and, of course, the Civil War enactment group, American Indians doing their dances (thank goodness no “rain” dance), and some great music.
Now, it was time to load everything in the cars and head for home. One of the group (no name mentioned, but initials are WB) packed in a couple folding chairs, a folding table, two green jackets and slammed down the trunk hood, got in the car and---the ignition keys were in a green jacket in the trunk---and, the cell phone (carried for emergency purposes) was at home in the “other” car. With the assistance and moral support of club members, everyone was on their way home after a locksmith from Salem arrived 45 minutes later.
It was a beautiful day and all ended well in spite of the goof ups by Ed and Bill.
