Jack & Doc

Hey Charlie, great ride report and I promised you and Cowboy a picture of Jack and Doc..........so here it be. As you recall Gary Barrett (Bubba) started this nonsense about me hauling logs using a pair of mules way back in the dark ages. Well there was a pair of horses not mules named Jack and Doc. They were named after two of the characters on a radio show back in the 40ts maybe even earlier called "I love a mystery" and the 3 main people in the show were Jack, Doc and Reggie. They were like our CSI bunch of today's TV going places to solve crimes and mainly get in a bunch of trouble. Radio was a marvelous invention that let you use your imagination to conjure up mental pictures that even the best of Hollywood can't replicate. They didn't have enough money to get a Reggie work horse so "Jack and Doc Got er Dun".

This picture was taken around 1943/44 in Santa Paula Ca. Down by Ventura where my uncle Grover had a couple of markets, restaurant and rental houses. He also owned a market in Ojai after the war that he bought for my cousin Paul to run after coming home from Germany after WWII. He really was a mess for a long time and my uncle was a sheriff in Ventura county at that time. I use to take my Model A over there from El Monte to visit and would drive my uncle around in his 1941 Cadillac. New at that time as they quit building cars in 1941 to convert over to building trucks, tanks, jeeps etc. they did build a few cars in 42 minus the chrome but not many.

My uncle had a sleep problem but didn't know what it was (Sleep Apnea) maybe but he would just fall asleep at the wheel while driving so I got to use his big black Cadillac and my cousin G.C. and I would ride thru town tormenting people by shooting them with peas using a tube like a large straw to blow thru. Had a lot of fun with my Uncle Grover Cleveland Lowe..........Ken
