ula turned 99 today.
We celebrated with pizza, wine, song, candle blow and pie n' ice cream. Not only is she 99 years old today, but her
life is filled with many wonderful accomplishments and she's still going
...maybe not as strong, but she still goes by bus with friends to Reno
to play the games. Several months ago she stopped driving, and a year
earlier stopped bowling on a league, because it made her wrist sore.
Grand-daughter Deanna, Eula, great-grand-son
Mason, great-grand-daughter Deena and grandson-in-law Kirk. Missing from
this occasion are son Ken and wife Darlene, and great-grand-daughter
Megan who couldn't make it, but wished her their best from afar.
The Union newspaper did a nice story about Eula and another
bowler in 2009. In "For these ladies, life is a bowl
of birthdays," Linda Thode described Eula Absher and
Susie Piombo as “two exceptional ladies that I have the privilege to
bowl with Tuesday mornings at Prosperity Lanes in Grass Valley.”
Absher recently celebrated her 96th birthday. "She ... not only lives
on her own, but still drives herself to bowling and carries a
respectable average.” Piombo recently celebrated her 92nd birthday.
“These ladies are an inspiration to watch and a delight to know."
Eula worked for Wal-Mart many years until she retired when
she was 80. Four days in the fabric department and three days in the
office. She said it was a wonderful place to work and would have continued working there, but she had to retire in order to care for
her husband who was very ill with Parkinson's. Among her many
accomplishments, Eula has sewed
and crocheted beautiful things like the large table doily and American
Indian doll in the photos below.
At right is a popular purse she made, and used to sell. These are just a few mementos of Eula's many
talents. Dear Eula, you have seen and experienced so many things during
your magnificent life that it would probably fill a wonderful storybook.
Pretend you wrote the following little poem that more or less symbolizes
your life in a continually changing world. We love you and wish you the
best life has to offer. Happy birthday!
Eula's
Poem
Ninety nine years old what more can I say,
Thirty six thousand one hundred thirty five days
Why I've lived so long God only knows,
Since He's the one who made me years ago.
From horses and buggies to motor cars,
To men on the moon, and dancing TV stars.
When I think of all I've seen and places I've been,
It's like a good book you'll read over again.
Ninety-nine winters and ninety-nine springs,
That I've seen and done so many things...
It brings to mind something we've all wondered,
What will I be doing when I'm one hundred?
